An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and ambitious individual to join the clerking team at 36 Stone. 

36 Stone is a leading shipping and commercial disputes team with 27 members, based in London and Singapore. Our barrister team is recognised by Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 as a leading set and was recently shortlisted by the Legal 500 for ‘Set of the Year’ across the Shipping, International Arbitration and Asia Pacific categories. Our members have multiple recommendations in the legal directories within our core areas ofShipping & Commodities, International Arbitration and Commercial Litigation.

36 Stone are part of the 36 Group, with over 150 barristers we are one of the largest sets in the UK. Other teams within the Group practice across Family, Public Law, Civil and Crime offering distinct specialisms with a shared focus.

Job Summary:

  • To provide members of chambers with a comprehensive clerking service which includes a pro-active and bespoke approach to individual members practice development.
  • To actively contribute to the business development and effective marketing of the team at a senior level.
  • Alongside the senior clerk, provide junior members of the clerking team with effective management, training, development and support.
  • To deputise for senior clerk when required.
  • To uphold and progress the team’s reputation within all core legal markets we operate in.

Person Specification

  • Highly motivated, driven, self-starter that can work both as a team and independently.
  • 5 – 10 years clerking experience in successful barristers chambers, preferably with knowledge of commercial litigation, shipping and international arbitration markets.
  • Demonstrable experience of dealing with fees, work allocation, liaison with members and dealing with difficult issues at a senior level.
  • Demonstrable experience of management of more junior staff, successful business development initiatives undertaken and a creative and proactive approach to practice management and business development.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to progress relationships with both internal and external stakeholders with a friendly, approachable and professional approach.
