IBC conference 2023

Here are some highlights of the IBC conference on the 18th November 2023.

Neurodivergence, what does it mean to you, are some of your members neurodiverse, how can you inclusively clerk if they are?

In recent years, society has gained more understanding of neurodivergence; but there is a long way to go.  The remaining stigma may prevent barristers disclosing a diagnosis.

This workshop, delivered by a neurodivergent barrister, provides the opportunity to gain insight into the realities of life at the bar when you’re neurodivergent.  You will gain a broad understanding of ADHD and Autism, what they might mean for a barrister’s practice, and consider together what reasonable adjustments you could make to aid in a barrister’s success.

Speaker: Leanne Buckley-Thomson              (Barrister, No 5 Chambers)

Chat GPT and the use of AI, an enhancement not a replacement

Join this workshop for demonstration (and discussion) on how Chat GPT can significantly enhance the skillset of a modern clerk. Rowan and Bernard will highlight how technology can save you time, and improve your marketing, practice management and BD material. AI is not here to replace us it’s a version upgrade for clerks..?!

Speakers: Rowan Caffull (36 Group) & Bernard Savage (10 ½ Boots)

Who we are

Institute of Barristers’ Clerks

The Institute of Barristers’ Clerks was founded in 1922. Our mission is to drive and demonstrate the excellence of the UK’s clerking profession though supporting the development and interests of our members and helping them uphold the high standards of the bar.

The Institute exists to bring our members and their profession closer together and represent the clerking profession within the wider legal community.

Our members are clerks across the whole of the UK, working in every area of the bar, from commercial litigation to criminal and family law. Connecting them and giving them the opportunity to swap experiences and share knowledge is a key part of what we do. Communicating the benefits of a career in clerking and promoting diversity within the profession is also integral to what we do.

Being a member of the IBC has enabled me to engage with lots of clerks outside of my own Chambers, and presented opportunities to be supported and to enhance my own education as a clerk.
