Job description

Atkin Chambers is a leading chambers providing legal services in the fields of Construction and Engineering, Energy, Natural Resources and Utilities, IT and Telecommunications and Shipbuilding. 

Chambers has a vacancy for a junior clerk. The successful candidate will be expected to provide support and assistance to the practice management team in providing a professional clerking service to the members of Chambers. Chambers is looking for the successful candidate to have experience in clerking, but applications will be considered for new entrants to the clerking profession. In addition, the successful candidate should be able to demonstrate that they are able to work well in a high-pressured environment.

The Junior Clerk’s duties will include the following:

  1. Preparation of hard copy and electronic bundles from papers submitted by the barristers’ clients.
  2. Assisting the barristers with the delivery of their documents and legal matter to and from court and other venues attended by barristers for hearings.
  3. Assisting the barristers with their administrative requirements in preparation for court hearings.
  4. Sourcing case authorities, both hard and soft copies from legal libraries.  Chambers has its own library but for certain information barristers rely on legal libraries outside of chambers.
  5. Overseeing the operations of the print and stationary room to include copying, faxing, printing, stocking of machines and ordering of stationery in a timely manner.
  6. Dealing with post as required to include sorting and delivery to the barristers’ rooms, recording of outgoing post onto chambers’ DX system, delivery of mail to the post office etc.
  7. Destruction of all confidential waste to include liaising with external suppliers as necessary to ensure that there is no opportunity for disclosure of confidential client material.
  8. Payment of cheques received for barristers into the barristers’ bank accounts.
  9. As and when required to do so to assist with the general running of Chambers including organising supplies and maintenance, support services, quality monitoring, health and safety and external and internal bookings.
  10. Supporting the clerking team in the administration of barristers’ work by entering relevant case data into LEX, chambers’ electronic diary and finance system. 
  11. Running reports from LEX to provide financial and marketing analysis data to inform chambers’ business planning.
  12. Such other tasks commensurate with the position that you might be asked to complete from time to time.

The anticipated salary will be based on previous experience and the quality of the candidate and will be in the range of £27,400-£29,000 p.a.
