Job description
JOB TITLE: Family Clerk (Manchester)
REPORTS TO: Lead Family Clerk and Head of Operations but ultimately to Head of Chambers/ Deputy Head of Chambers
LOCATION: Manchester City Centre but may be required to travel to clients’ offices on occasion
SALARY: £30,000 – £34,000 depending on experience
HOURS: 9am-5.30pm Monday – Friday with some hours outside this period and telephone coverage on a rota basis.

JOB SUMMARY:
Primary tasks are:
First, to assist in the overall delivery of clerking services but primarily to the Family Team and to provide both counsel and their clients with a comprehensive clerking service and to work collaboratively with other members of the clerking team to also achieve that.
This will in turn require you to ensure the smooth running of the clerking and in particular, family clerking by:
*Striving to ensure that work is allocated to appropriate counsel avoiding conflict of interest and potential clashes where possible
*Striving to ensure that work is allocated to appropriate counsel in good time for work to be prepared.
*Helping to manage the family diary on a day-to-day basis and dealing with all relevant correspondence (including emails, phone calls etc.).
*Forward planning the diary to ensure the timely delivery of briefs.
*Taking telephone bookings of hearings and conferences.
*Negotiating fees when that is required.
*Ensuring briefs and instructions are properly and accurately logged on to the computer data record and are available to counsel.
*When called upon to do so, the billing of work conducted by the Family Team and which requires you to be familiar with Legal Aid Billing rules and regulations.
*Ensuring members of Chambers are accurately informed of their commitments for the following working day and noting diary accordingly.
*Helping to raise the brand profile of the overall Chambers by assisting in marketing activities in and out of chambers and arranging and attending at Chambers seminars and events.
*To ensure the implementation of the chambers equality and diversity policy.
